In the immortal words of Israel Kamakawiwoʻole;

" Somewhere over the rainbow, bluebirds fly,
And the dreams that you dream of,
Dreams really do come true. "

Darwin May Ball returns on the 19 June 2020 for a night of revelry in colour.
Put down your studies and discover what lies at the end of the rainbow.
Indulge your senses in a synesthetic spectrum of music, tastes, and sights.

All tickets can be bought with a £50 deposit with the remainder payable by the 1st May

Our standard May Ball ticket covers the full eight hours of delicious food and drink, as well as a diverse range of top quality music and entertainments across the grounds of Darwin College.

Reach the rainbow early! Our queue-jump tickets give you a head start on the food, drink, music and entertainments!

With the VIP experience, guests arrive at the ball an hour before our regular guests by punt, to be welcomed by a  champagne reception and a special entrance performance.

What is the Darwin May Ball?

The Darwin May Ball is an annual fixture on the last friday of May Week, held on the central site of Darwin College. Stretching from Mill pond to Silver Street, our unique site - we are the only college with an island - is transformed for one night into a kaliedoscope of colour.

Can I bring guests?

Yes! Tickets to Darwin May Ball 2020 are available for Darwin students, Darwin members, and students from other colleges, as well as for friends and family from beyond Cambridge!

What are the timings of the evening?

This year the ball will run from sunset to sunrise. Guests enter at 9pm (or earlier, if Q-Jump or VIP), and the ball finishes at 5am, after the survivors' photo - a full two hours extended from the 2019 Darwin May Ball!

Will I have to bring money to the ball?

No - your ticket is inclusive of all drinks, food and entertainment.

Will you serve vegetarian and/or vegan food?

We have a range of vendors offering a variety of different food, including vegetarian and vegan options.

If I'm not at the ball can I stay in my room on Darwin main site?

Sadly not. Owing to security concerns and restrictions on the number of people on site everyone living on the main college site will have to vacate their room - except Newnham Terrace 11 and 12. All rooms will be checked by security, a member of college staff and committee and security will be maintained throughout the ball. After the ball has finished at 5am you can regain access. If you are attending the ball, you may return to your room from 1am but cannot rejoin the ball. If you are struggling to find alternative accommodation please contact the presidents using the email address in the committee section of this website.

Food and drink workers will be rotated through a variety of positions throughout Darwin May Ball. The position mainly involves preparing and serving food and drink, ensuring food and drink stalls are well stocked and cleaning food/bar areas as required. You will be on-call to be allocated different responsibilities throughout the night, depending on where staffing is needed. The role may involve stepping in where certain teams or areas are understaffed, including helping entertainment set up / pack up.

Workers will be required to work a 7.5 hour shift (which will include two 30 minute breaks) between 6:00pm to 5:00am. You will also be required to attend a 1 hour training session at Darwin College prior to the ball. The rate of payment is £80 for the 7.5 hour shift and 1 hour training session. This is in line with The National Living Wage for ages 25 and above.
